NEWS YOU CAN USE

A ROUNDUP OF OUR FAVORITES IN COLLEGE NEWS THIS WEEK

TIKTOK BLACKOUT

As you know, TikTok is back after 14 long hours, and many teenagers were losing their minds! But here are some stats you may not know:

Nearly half (47%) of undergraduate students use TikTok daily, according to a recent survey from Intelligent, a college resource website. Of those who regularly use the app:
75% use it to help with schoolwork
30% say their grades would worsen if it were banned

Click HERE to get the scoop on what’s really happening and how it could impact one of America’s favorite pastimes.

UT CHAOS

The University of Texas at Austin has extended its decision timeline for thousands of anxious high school seniors. Originally set for January 15, 2025, decisions will now be released on February 15, 2025.

While it may seem like a small shift, for many students it means another month of waiting — and heightened anticipation — as they await news that could shape their academic future.

Click HERE to read more about why this wait is so hard to bear.

FEEL-GOOD STORY

We love this story about a program in Virginia that helps former foster youth earn college degrees — at any age.

Great Expectations, launched over 15 years ago, supports individuals who grew up in foster care in achieving two-year degrees. Funded primarily through private contributions, the program offers both financial and emotional support to community college students, regardless of how long it’s been since they were in foster care.

DID YOU KNOW?!

LOL originally meant “Little Old Lady”!?

Language evolves over time — and so do acronyms. While “LOL” is now universally understood as “laugh out loud,” its earliest known use dates back to the 1960s.

Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Herb Caen used “LOL” in his book Only in San Francisco to mean “little old lady.” He wrote:
“A traffic officer bellowed at an LOL who didn’t seem to know which way to turn her car.”

So the next time your teenager says “LOL,” you can tell them what it really means 😉

THE ROLE OF CURRICULUM PLANNING

By North Shore College Consulting

Although it’s only January, high school students across the country are already planning for next year’s registration process.

When selecting courses, it’s important to remember that a student’s transcript is the most critical component of a college application. It provides a complete record of classes taken and grades earned — and nearly every college requires it as part of the admissions process.
