WHY REJECTION IS REALLY REDIRECTION: A FRESH TAKE ON COLLEGE ADMISSIONS STRESS
Share

Let’s be honest, rejection feels like a punch in the gut. Whether it’s a breakup, not making the team, or that dreaded “We regret to inform you…” email from a college, it feels as though your dreams have been crushed. But here’s the thing: rejection is neverthe end of the story. In fact, it’s just the beginning. (Cue the eyeroll)
After years of hard work, learning that you haven't been accepted can take a serious toll on your self esteem. But let me let you in on a little secret: rejection isn’t about your worth, your abilities, or your potential. It’s simply a redirect.
Colleges receive thousands of applications every year and the decisions they make are influenced by a million different variables. Besides academic performance and extracurriculars, there are institutional needs like quotas, diversity and legacy that are completely out of your control. The decision is not a reflection of whether or not you’d be amazing on campus or if you could handle the workload. You’re awesome, and they know that, but more importantly, you need to know that.
What’s the alternative to feeling crushed by rejection? One word: Perception. Take a moment to feel the disappointment—it's normal. Then, flip how you interpret the rejection. Instead of thinking, “I’m not good enough” or “If only I had…,” try this: “I’m meant to thrive somewhere else.”
The truth is, our circumstances don’t define our lives. It’s how we perceive them and the way we choose to respond that ultimately shapes our direction. So, choose to see rejection as redirection.
Here’s a little secret no one talks about: the college you attend won’t write the story of your life. It’s not like you graduate and—poof!—your future is magically set. What really matters is how you handle challenges, whether you’re crushing it or facing setbacks without resilience.. Success isn’t about the name on your diploma—it’s about how you show up every single day, no matter where you are. And hey, if you need proof, just look at Steve Jobs, J.K. Rowling, Oprah, and Bill Gates—they didn’t need fancy degrees to become legends. So, take a deep breath—you’ve got this!
They say you can only ‘connect the dots’ when looking back, and it’s so true. What feels like a roadblock today often becomes the stepping stone to something incredible. So, if that rejection email lands in your inbox, take a deep breath and say, “Thanks for the redirection—I’m excited to see where this new path leads!”
